Google recently defined new rules for collecting and using the vast quantity of personal data that are collected through different services, such as Gmail, Google+ etc. The purpose of new rules is to use personal data for more relevant search results. But also, this activity may be used for other purposes too.

The French agency for protection of personal data ( Commission nationale de l'informatique et des libertés - CNIL ) has called the Google to postpone the activation of new rules, since they consider that the new Google rules may be against the rules of European Union for protection of personal data.

It seems that there are many different ways how the personal data can be used. Search results relevance is only one of them. The wide range of data that are gathered through the different Google service can be used to create very precise profile of every user. This profile can be used for different purposes.

Google against privacy

This is not the first conflict between CNIL and Google. Last year the CNIL initiated the trial related to collection of private data through Google Street View Service.

It is highly likely that these profiles will be used for targeted advertising. It is well known that the Google own the giant adverting network through Adwords and Adsense services. The Adsense advertising is based on principle of targeted advertising. The program is checking the content of the page and displays the most relevant ads, based on keywords used on the page.

Now, with the use of personal profiles, the advertising pressure can be more targeted and accurate. CNIL concluded that the Google’s explanation for purpose of using these data is too vague. It seems that this call by CNIL will initiated the meeting with Google, in order to further clear the current situation.

This is not the first conflict between CNIL and Google. Last year the CNIL initiated the trial related to collection of private data through Google Street View Service. The case was finalized by the ban of this activity and penalty of €100.000.
