Leadership Through 4 Cs (E)

Leadership

Who can be a leader? What are 4 important assets for successful leader?

Posted: Aug 2010

A recent study among the CEOs asked the question “What is the biggest obstacle in achieving goals?”. The answer was – the lack of capable leaders within organization. How can that be true when there are so many educational courses in management? There are so many books related to leadership, but still there seems that lack of leadership exists. Probably, due to more and more complex tools and techniques managers lost the sense for simplicity.

In reality, the leadership should not be that complex and non-applicable. Daily management routines should contain basic management elements that will lead to effective management. The core elements of effective leadership are: Character, Capability, Credibility and Communication.

Character

What is the character? It is said that the true character of some person is the behavior when nobody is looking that person. When we are not observed we are behaving the most natural. Character represent integrity, doing the right things, fairness and lead by example. When people see such behavior they know what they can expect. If they know what they can expect, they can trust you. You cannot lead without the trust.

Capability

Do you have skills and competencies necessary for your job? Are you aware of your gaps and do you have development plans for closing the gaps? Employee can not follow the leader that does not have the knowledge of the processes within the function, since they are skeptical about competencies of the leader. It is true that the leader cannot have the level of competencies of every subordinate. The Supply Chain manager does not need to have skills of the Forklift Operator. But understanding of logistic standards and procedures is required for Supply Chain manager in order to build credibility for successful leader.

Credibility

The leadership should not be that complex and non-applicable. Daily management routines should contain basic management elements that will lead to effective management. The core elements of effective leadership are: Character, Capability, Credibility and Communication.

Once you built Character and Capability you need to build Credibility. The credibility is the quality of being believable and trustworthy. Your actions should be open and honest, no matter what is the situation. If you prove your credibility through integrity, fairness and consistency, you have one more asset for successful leader.

Communication

You can have the character and capability and you may want to build credibility, but without proper communication you will not be able to be a leader that will be followed by others. You need to communicate your opinions, decisions and plans in a clear and understanding way. If you try to speak in a vague manner or if you have hidden agenda people will not trust you. Show what you think and do what you told in order to be a leader.

Finally, everyone who aspire to be a successful leader need to ask himself/herself a question „Why would somebody follow me? “. Being a manager at specific position does not mean that people will be followers. The leader needs to show much more than the position shows. Leader need to perform the influence to the others through strong character, outstanding capabilities, proven credibility and clear and open communication.
